Vets2 huffed and puffed, but we couldn't get the ball in. Apart from the three times when we scored.
After last week's poor performance and result, Vets2 were keen to make amends. And where better than against the Vets3 of our old rivals British United? In these strange times, there were a few last minute changes to the squad, but we managed to get a full 15-man group to Mechelen - assisted by the injured Leo.
After a few distractions pre-match, we took to the pitch with a strong team - and Johann between the sticks. From the first few minutes it was clear that this was a game in which we would have the ball most of the time. The question would be whether we could turn the possession into chances, and the chances into goals.
With Benoit in central midfield next to Gustave, we were always able to quickly win back the ball if we lost it. And they would then feed Milan or George on the wings or Nigel and Costa down the middle. To be fair to Costa, he was mainly up against their one really good defender, but that meant that he did his bit in creating space for the rest of us.
It was probably the first game of the season where Munish and Kevin got forward from the full back position, with Brian and Roger having a quiet afternoon. However, not as quiet as Johann in goal - who had just one "save" to make all half. But that was one more than Roger who went in goal for the second half.
Despite all the possession and a good few chances, we simply could not find the back of the net. Their keeper made a number of saves, but nothing really exceptional. Just as we were starting to tear our hair out we got the breakthrough. George did well on the right wing, beat his ban and crossed nicely to Nigel on the edge of the box. Instead of being overhasty, he controlled it calmly, did a little shimmy, and then buried it in the bottom corner. 1-0.
Would this open the floodgates and enable us to score a flurry of goals? No. It was more of the same. Near total possession, a few chances, but no more goals.
The change of tactics at half time - with Ady coming on on the right and Johann in central midfield - may have changed the optics, but didn't change the basic story. Vets2 huffed and puffed, but we couldn't get the ball in. We tried going wide, we tried going down the middle. We tried long balls, long shots, we tried tici-taca. (If that is misspelled it's because not everyone would have recognised it as such.) In short, we just couldn't score. Then with 15 minutes to go we finally got the breathrough. Milan got through on the left and put it a good low cross, and Ady got their first at the near post and flicked it into the corner. 2-0.
At this stage the ref (their man) tried to blow the full time whistle, but we were able to persuade him that he hadn't stopped his watch at half time. Maybe he just wanted to put everyone out of their misery.
With Hughie and Adnane now on, we moved to a back one, and continued to dominate and fail to score. And then, just as we thought it was over, Adnane dribbled round three of them on the left wing and centred it for Nigel to grab his second. 3-0.
Speaking after the game, the Vets 2 coach said: "It's nice to have picked up another three points, but we really should have scored more today."
