After winning the first two games of the season, Vets 2 came into this game full of confidence. It was nice to welcome Gustave, Johann and Alex into the squad for their first games of the season. Having injured himself in training, Roger agreed to be delegué. But when the designated referee didn't turn up, he ended up having to take the whistle himself, with the injured Ady taking over the white armband delegué duties.

The game started with a bang. British United had kick off and within 20 seconds we won back the ball and passed it around. The ball came to Johann in the centre at the back, who called for Leo to make a run, and put through a wonderful 30m pass into the space behind their defence. In a race between their defender, their goalkeeper, and Leo, there was only one winner - as the Italian goalscorer lobbed the ball first time over the Keeper and into the empty net. 30 seconds gone 1-0 to the good guys.

That set the tone for the rest of the game, although we were never quite as efficient.

In the minutes that followed we mounted the pressure on British United, but weren't immediately able to turn it into further goals. 10 minutes in, very much against the run of play, they had a shot from outside the box which Luc did well to push over the bar. If he hadn't kept that out, the afternoon might have looked very different.

After that, the rest of the first half was pretty much one-way traffic towards the British United goal. Munish and Kevin were getting forward on the flanks, allowing us to get more people into the box. Milan, Martin, Leo and Carl all had chances to further our lead, but were kept out by an inspired British United keeper, a bobbly pitch and/or some dire finishing! With 5 minutes to go before half-time we finally got a second, when Adnane managed to dribble round 3 defenders and put it in the top corner from just inside the box. 2-0.

With Carl limping off just before half time, and 3 further substitutions during or just after half time, we saw Nando, Chris Ffinch, Alex and Mikey join the fray. And the pressure continued, with Ffinchie now leading the line and Leo on the right. Any time that they won the ball, Gustave was there in midfield to win it back - looking more and more like Ngolo Kante.

Benoit and Johann were under very little pressure at the back, and so the challenge was how to convert our dominant possession into goals. Again and again, we kept on misplacing the final ball, or firing wide when we had a shot. But British United seemed to be getting more and more tired.

In the 55th minute our effort finally paid off when Adnane got the ball in the box and danced around 2 or 3 defenders before placing the ball in the top corner. 3-0.

One minute later, Adnane completed his first hat trick for the club with a nice jink and a shimmy, and a left foot shot which wrong-footed the keeper. 4-0.

A couple of minutes later Leo - who was proving very dangerous on the right wing - was able to put in an excellent cross which Mikey ran onto and finished first time. 5-0.

Vets2 tried hard to add another one - with captain Benoit making a great solo run and cross, but it was not to be. Nando claimed that we should have had a penalty and (even more loudly) a direct free kick just outside the box. (Maybe we'll get them another time!) But we should not complain with a 5-0 victory.

Man of the Match voting reflected the good performances from "newcomers" Gustave and Johann, but the run away victor was hat-trick hero Adnane. Instead of getting the match ball, he got the bill for a round of drinks. That's ABSSA in a nutshell.

Anyway, with 9 points out of 9, Vets2 are now equal top of the league. The only other team with 9 is Mireille Wemmel. And guess who we play next week? Should be a good game.
