Vets 1 concede four in five minutes to throw away lead in the final quarter.
After a great run of 6 wins in a row , V1 decided the league shouldn’t be decided just yet and lost their last match. This would be the game to put us back on track!
The game got off to a cracking start, the ref giving a foul for touching the ball and their captain sensing the best way was to not try and play at all. So for some reason the 1st penalty was awarded to the Chiefs, middle of the goal 1:0. Scrappy stuff followed and then.... penalty
2. For the good guys this time though. Gonzalo made a great run into the box
and then fell over.....clear penalty! Up stepped captain Cian 1:1.
Lifted by the purely struck penalty the "British” pushed on and started to pass the ball. Short to feet , a few touches of the ball and the confidence came to all. A free kick on the edge of the box and up stepped Cian again. The strong Westerly wind took the ball towards the top corner of the goal ... we waited .... could it be....no :-( off the bar.
Half time soon followed as the ref reached 35 free kicks.
Time for some tactical changes, Ben off,Ben on. Cian off , Ben on. Confused ? We all were except Ben G. A corner from Gonzalo and a great header from the sub Ben Griffiths. 2:1 up. Bas B and Carl were running the midfield, lots of good running and positive play, it seemed easy.
Then arriving late and making his way to the bench was the Chiefs super sub. Just back from Chile he turned the game on its head. And that’s what he fell on when our own S American playmaker decided to show him what an Argentinian tackle is like. Unfortunately it was in the box and so penalty #3. "Middle of the goal "was the shout to Tommy. Surely he would save this one and win MOM ? Well to be fair it was a well struck penalty and even the wind couldn’t help us. 2:2
All to play for, well not for Carl as he was taken off muttering in Yorkshire something about Mugabe.. For those who don’t know Yorkshire it’s a lot of incomprehensible swearing. On came Bas 2 (Ten Holter). The next action came from a long ball over our backs to their super sub and goal 3:2 to the Chiefs.
We didn’t have long left to save this one as we were reaching 65 fouls. Then it got worse, a pin point cross to Ben L , he couldn’t miss , and he didn’t. 4:2, Confused again ? Ahh wrong goal, well for us ! Bas B tried to get us back into the game with a run through on goal. Deflections and a back heel that just went wide. I’ll go up front shouted the V1 stalwart Roger!
A long ball was played up to the new centre forward, luckily it floated over his head to Ben G. In the opponents area and looking to turn his man the ref blew. Penalty #4 ? No said the ref , it was definitely outside the area. But, but,,, no said the ref I saw it very clearly. The free kick came to nothing and a quick break upfield resulted in the Chiefs 5th goal from another free kick.
The game was all almost over , but not yet for Roger who smashed in a scorcher from inside his own half. Well that’s what the eagle eyed referee told his wife in the bar. The Yorkshire men were too busy swearing and complaining to notice.
So a tearful RBBFC V1 team trudged off, 5:3 losers. Well there is next week to get our high intensity pressure play sorted out.
