RBBFC 2s hosted Besace at fortress Rosieres in the early autumn sunshine, with mixed emotions over their recent form in ABBSA’s Division 2B. The early season gloom had lifted after back to back victories, including a win against early season leaders New Arquois, but the disappointment of only securing a point against Forestois the week before in a game they had dominated, had knocked back the optimism that had built from these positive results.

Besace were a team RBBFC 2s knew well having secured maximum points from them in their victorious campaign last year. Besace knew RBBFC 2s well too, and they had an air of resignation about them before the game had even started.

RBBFC 2s were low on numbers, with a few senior players missing throughout the club and Skonierzki having completed a big money move to the provincial Austrian leagues. Even so, the starting XI was strong, with the ever reliable Wetzel having to make do with a place on the bench. Making his debut for RBBFC 2s was full English Ben Thom, doubling the British contingent within the ranks. However, having spent his formative academic years in "Europe” and speaking a foreign language would call in to doubt his allegiance to queen, country and the second B in RBBFC.

Besace had brought their resigned looks with them on to the pitch as RBBFC started the game in a flash, breaking the deadlock early on. After a free kick in the half pitch of Besace, Legere, instead of crossing, intelligently played wide to Si M’hammed who picked out the returning Deschamps in the box. Deschamps tried to flick the ball passed the keeper, but injury and a lack of game time had meant he didn’t quite manage to pull it off. However, he did just enough to force the keeper to rebound the ball back in to the six yard box for the now bronzed McGirr to tap the ball home. Goal. 1-0 McGirr.

The early goal was exactly what RBBFC had been missing in earlier games in the season, and had allowed them to control the game, constricting Besace in to submission.

After a few chances had been spurned by the ever wasteful frontline of RBBFC 2s – in whatever combination they play in – RBBFC found the second goal which had all but confirmed the 3 points even at this early stage in the game.

McGirr found himself out wide, in an unfamiliar position one-on-one with the Besace left back. Unsure what to do in this unfamiliar part of the pitch, he summoned the spirit of the pineapple - "Joga bonito...Joga bonito Ali...”. Unsure as to what these foreign murmurings meant, McGirr assumed he was talking about something Brazilian and recalled the Nike adverts from his youth* and "Denilsen-ed” the left back, knocking the ball between his legs. Proper ‘megs. McGirr then pulled the ball back to Henriquez, who expertly shifted the ball on to his left peg, before drilling the ball in to the bottom corner. Goal. 2-0 Henriquez.

The game was quickly put beyond doubt after RBBFC made it 3-0 before half time. McGirr had again found himself out wide again, but this time out left. McGirr tried a quick one-two with Lo Presti, but lost in the deep blue ocean of Lo Presti’s eyes, McGirr was blocked off. Fortunately the ball found its way to Henriquez, who slid it through the backline in to the path of Deschamps who lifted his finish above the on-rushing keeper. Goal. 3-0 Deschamps.

Half time came and went, and RBBFC could be content with their performance, but El Capitano and the players clearly wanted more. Puig, McGirr and Gunter all had something to prove with their "friend”, girlfriend and teammate’s girlfriend (and his kids) watching on respectively.

The second half was one of frustration for RBBFC. The result was done, and RBBFC had continued their dominance over the game, but Besace were getting more joy further up the pitch as RBBFC legs tired and gaps started to appear.

Chances still came for RBBFC, and frustratingly went. Deschamps, Henriquez, and second half substitute Wetzel were all guilty of missing chances up top. All three were put under pressure by the absent Lambers, who was watching on from the stands. Legere was visibly annoyed with this wastefulness, and although he didn’t quite verbalise his frustration as he has done in the past - given his fatigue of watching Lukaku the night before - his stroppy Gallic shrugs clearly conferred his expressions of "puttttttonnn” and "shiiiiittttt”.

The final whistle went, and confirmed the result. RBBFC 2s had continued their good form, securing 10 points from 12 and getting their third clean sheet on the bounce after conceding 7 goals in their first 3 games. Unfortunately, the run of clean sheets would end for El Capitano after spending the rest of the weekend in romantic Bruges.

Being just 3 points from the top spot in Division 2B, RBBFC 2s look to continue their march up the league at Pharma next week. RBBFC can be confident that on the back of a few good performances, and continued results like this one could find them right in the mix to retain their title.
