A lovely sunny day and perfect small pitch gave optimal conditions for the VETS 2 to continue the point collection this spring.

We turned up with 13 players, as Chairman Mao was away and a couple of players were press-ganged into Vets 1, so it looked like we would be faced with a tough challenge.

The first half was fairly equal with a lot of ball possession that didn't lead to many clear chances, although Timme created some space for a shot with some quick foot-work and so V2 were 1 up. No chance for the goalie. We got even more confident, although the home team did create a few half chances. Luckily, Adams in goal showed his class.

Our confidence grew and we started passing the ball around and looked organised (well, sometimes) in midfield, and strong at the back where Scott - one of the 2 holding midfielders - looked confident and Wrigley (MOM) dominated and intimidated the opposition, winning all 50-50 balls and making sure that the opposition didn't get a sniff. Both John and George – two relatively speedy gentlemen had a couple of good runs - set up by Tony. Once John tried a 1-2 with Timme and actually got the ball back (surprise), but had his shot blocked by the keeper. Fortunately, Pete followed up and smashed in the rebound. Afterwards, Chris Ff had a couple of good chances, and were perhaps a little fortunate to be going in a 2-0 up at the break, but we weren't complaining.

We continued controlling the second half but allowed the home team more ball possession. Luckily, it led to nothing but a couple of not-so-dangerous chances and many counter attacks for us. John had a couple of good combinations and, in a remarkable double 1-2 with Timme, the American hit a cross from the touchline that was expertly dispatched into his own net by one of their defenders: 3-0 and still 20 minutes left. Game over.

However, the home team continued to press and VETS2 were pushed even further back. Despite this, we didn't give away any clear-cut chances thanks for the good work of the defensive unit. Wrigley was breaking down their attacks and launching counter-attacks; on one occasion Chris Ff went close but was denied by a great save from their keeper. Same pattern and the well organised defence and motivated midfielders made it hard for the home team to create chances and in a counter attack one of their defenders won the ball but "a la Vertongen" decided to slide the ball into Timme's path who finished neatly taking his tally to 2 for the game.

That gave some "energy"to Timme. And the combination of a generous defence who marked but didn't have any speed and Wrigley, Highlander Scott, Alex constantly breaking their strikes and initiated counters with some precision "long passes" led to 4 more goals for Timme in the last 15 mins and he still had time to hit the post twice from narrow angles!

Subs Phil and Bas were sent on during the last quarter and played well making it harder for Chairman Mao to set the starting line-up for the next game.

0-8 - a pretty solid result considering we only beat them 1-0 at home. Excellent team performance, very strong defence and midfield. Timme made his 16th goal in 7 games since Xmas and the VETS 2 making the 6th win this year climbing one level up in the league table to no 5. THE "VETS 2" ARE COMING …
