Who needs a circus with entertainment like this? After all the distractions of pre season and a slow start Vets 1 are now maturing(!) into a serious footballing force.

Amidst all the euphoria of the latest wins and no losses in 5 games, certain concerns need noting, particularly the alarming number of chances that are not converted, and the lack of composure for periods of the game.

From the outset Wemmel were obviously in no mood for attack with a static 5 – 4 – 1 formation, posing no threat in early stages. Vets 1 started confidently despite the unusual surface( a perfect grass pitch) passing the ball around with ease, finding space and creating chances. Tony was getting past the defenders on the right and although not seeing much of the ball Freddie was doing the same down the left. Roger lead from the back distributing the ball out of defense with confidence while Paul snubbed out any potential attack from their lone centre forward.

Captain Carl will no doubt be pleased with the 23 passes that saw the ball maneuvered out of Vet’s 1 defense and through the midfield to create a chance for Frank on the edge of the area which the keeper saved. This continued to be the pattern of the game for the first twenty minutes with plenty of shots on target but all being handled comfortably by the Wemmel keeper. It was therefore with some relief that a nicely worked move on the left saw a cross come in that Brian Lewis arriving late managed to get his toe on and steer the ball passed the Wemmel goalkeeper into the back of the net. It had been coming but the relief was palpable.

The game then became scrappy with the Wemmel central midfield pair giving it out but did not like it when Si gave some back and they began complaining to the referee at every opportunity. Vets 1 continued to dominate the game but some sloppy passing and unforced errors gave Wemmel the confidence they needed to come back into the game and though they never really threatened it began to frustrate vets 1. The half time whistle came at the right moment.

Captain Carl gave his half time team talk as did all the other 10 players, but the consensus was “what the hells going on we should be 4 – 0 up already”!

The second half began much as the first had done with Vets 1 creating chances controlling the ball out of defense and playing it wide at every opportunity, but again falling to create any really clear chances.

Wemmel also had their opportunity to draw level when a free kick from just outside the area looked as though it was going in but the with cat like reflexes Mazza tipped the ball on to the bar and Roger cleared the rebound.

The game was now being stretch and more opportunities were being created. Si continued to have his verbal match with the his opposite number in central midfield but then moved out wide right, with Brian Lewis coming into the middle, just to ensure the verbal did not become something else….

It was then that the second goal with came, Brian Morris moved the ball out left where it eventually came to Dean on the half way line cutting inside he passed cross field to Si wide on the right. Fortunately the ball went through the legs of defender allowing Si to head directly into the area where he unselfishly pulled the ball across the area, leaving the keeper stranded and Tony made no mistake putting the ball in the back of the empty net. 2 – 0 and effectively the game over.

So another good result for Vets 1 and with results again going in their favour they continue their rise up the table.
