Where were you when we beat Cosmos?
Team: Sejersen, Wrigley, Waite, Shiono, Kelly, Ledbury, Yearsley, Lewis, Vermeersch, Gutierrez, Hoskins
Subs: White, Harbusch
Goals: Hoskins (2), Yearsley, Vermeersch, Ledbury
Today's visitors arrived at Rosiere needing only one point to be crowned champions. All season it had been Vets1, and the visitors battling it out at the top of the table, and today looked like being the culmination of a seasons hard work for both teams. Cosmos looked confident, and had even bought along a photographer to capture what they hoped would be a memorable day!!! It certainly was going to be that, but not for the reasons they had hoped.
Vets1 having suffered the long term loss of Macdonald and Eriksen, did manage to pull a couple of not too shabby replacements in Hoskins and Yearsley :) we also had a strong bench of White and Harbusch, and a packed and vocal 'West Stand' containing the first team squad, who would all play their part.
Off we went and right from the start, Vets 1 set about the visitors in a determined fashion. It was clear that the visitors could play some nice football, showing why they were top. The early exchanges saw Vets1 edge out our opponents all across the park, with Cosmos looking niggled and unsettled. There were one or two late tackles, one on Kelly should have resulted in a card but did not.
I think it was after around fifteen minutes that the ball was played forward to Hoskins, who tried his luck from just outside the box with an under hit shoot that the keeper looked to have covered, but in it went and we were 1 - 0 up. With the lead came confidence and buoyed by the chants from the West stand, Vets 1 were playing the better football and Cosmos grew ever more frustrated.
The ever reliable Sejersen was called into action on one or two occasions and did have to make an excellent save diving at the feet of the in rushing Cosmos attacker. But in reality our defence looked solid, and with Yearsley playing a deeper midfield role in front of the defence we did not look like conceding.
At half time, a tactical switch saw 'Mad Mike' Gutierrez, who had, played excellent in the first half, replaced by Tony "I'll call in an air strike if we look like losing" White. The team talk at half time was for much of the same, and Frank "it's too cold to get changed" actually did just that and appeared ready for action on the bench.
It is hard to do justice to just how well we played in the second half. Everyone was on top of their game and winning their individual battles across the pitch. The second goal came not long after the restart, and what a goal it was. I cannot remember seeing a better goal at this level as Vets 1 stroked the ball around the pitch, with Cosmos chasing shadows. Simon Yearsley was to finish a move that cut through the Cosmos side that was left simply bewildered by the move. 2 - 0. Following the goal the 'West stand erupted into chants of "We love you Simon we do" and as much as it could Rosiere and Vets 1 were rocking.
Throughout the side we were continuing to dominate. Carl was doing his impression of 'Cesc' bringing the ball confidently down on his chest, then laying it off, before receiving the ball back and then switching the ball out wide to an overlapping White. Lewis was kept busy by their very useful full back, but always looked in control. Wrigley, Shiono, Waite and Kelley made swift work of Cosmos attacks.
Shortly after the second goal Vets 1 broke forward again and a Yearsley shot, was only parried by the keeper and Piet 'quick feet' Vermeersch rushed in and slotted the ball home 3 - 0. The stands were singing again and there was no way back for Cosmos.
Tempers were beginning to get the better of our opponents and the referee had decided that he would like to see a tighter game and seemed to give every decision to our opponents, which only seemed to encourage their moaning and niggling even more. Despite this Hoskins pushing forward hit a shot that the keeper could not hold and Hosky followed it up, and it was 4 - 0. The stand and the bench erupted, literally!
The Cosmos photographer who had now been made redundant for the afternoon took exception to the celebrations of Cunningham, Macdonald and Eriksen on the bench and one or two words were exchanged. The referee, spurred on by the moaning Cosmos players and bench had to intervene after some idiot hurled the sponge at the photographer :) The Vets 1 bench were asked to retreat behind the fence!
Back to the pitch and the packed west stand was now in full voice singing the praises of Hosky following his second goal. The game continued in the same fashion and Vets 1, came under a little more pressure and Cosmos continued in vain to snatch a consolation. Carl continued his repertoire of impersonations with one of Henry for the fifth goal. The ball having dropped to him in the box, Carl took a swing at the ball that then went in the opposite direction of where he had appeared to aim it! Some say that he scuffed the shot and it was a lucky goal. Whatever it was 5 - 0, and Carl ran to the West Stand to receive the chants from the supporters. Full time 5 - 0.
This was a fantastic performance and one that kept the faint hope of winning the league alive. Cosmos were shell shocked after seeing their planned celebrations ripped to pieces. They had only conceded fourteen goals all season, and this afternoon had seen that figure greatly increased.
Man of the match was a tight affair between Hosky and Simon, with several of the first team squad swelling the votes. In the end Hosky took it and did not look to happy on his second trip up to the bar, having just bought a round. Perhaps next time he will wait until after the voting :)
