In the end we started with the bare 11 thanks to Chris Ffinch helping out, Simon Weaver arriving just in time after having to go back for his glasses and John Hodgson turning up at the last minute and offering to delegue.

For this bottom of the league encounter against our British cousins we had an attacking 4-3-3 formation with Colin Reynolds playing his first game of the season having in front of him a solid and robust defence of Maza, Kevin Hyde, new boy Duncan Taylor and Alex Knott. The midfield was a skilful combination of Chris Ffinch, Patrick Roosen and Peter Brown and the dangerous attacking formation of Chris Dartnell, Simon Weaver and Ian Maybrey. All looked good.

The first half was pretty uneventful; we gave away our customary early goal but for the rest of the half neither team really threatened.

The second half started with Maza (unable to walk) going in goal and Colin playing right back. Once again we gave away a poor early goal from a corner but then the game opened up. Ffinch and Roosen were starting to dominate and chances started to be created, a nice move saw Weaver with a good scoring opportunity only for the ball to go over the goal, over the net and down the e411, he must have taken the wrong glasses. On the break British United were dangerous and Maza pulled of a great save hobbling and diving at the feet of the main man. The tackles started being a lot stronger and Taylor, Hyde and Knott were leaving their mark with some very forceful challenges. Upfront Dartnell was always making himself available, Weaver was linking well with the midfield and Maybrey was bouncing from one player to another and the poor ref was having a job maintaining the decent spirit of the first half.

Eventually with 10 minutes to go we resorted to 3-4-3 and were rewarded after a really nice 1-2 combinations from Roosen, Ffinch and Maybrey left Weaver with a sprint on goal and a chance that he took with great calm aka Jimmy Greaves.

Now we were on the up and the true reward came near the end, again a nice move, ended with Maybrey winning a 30/70 ball and lashing it into the net from 20yards.

A fair result in the end on a hot day, a great effort from the 11 a number of which ended up hobbling and the MOM was between the skill of Roosen and the excellent debut from Taylor, in the end the new man took the honours.

Finally, an incredible bit of sportsmanship by British United needs to be recognised. In the first half when we were down 1-0, we had a corner, which they counter attacked very quickly. Brown and Reynold managed to deal with it but their centre forward appealed for a corner that never was, the referee who was still in the other half gave the corner. The subsequent corner might or might not have hit Weavers hand and Weaver might or might not have been in the box but the referee gave a penalty. British United after great discussion eventually decided to deliberately shoot wide and miss a chance to go 2-0 up.
