As always with the 4th, life is full of unexpected events: 5 in total to be precise on that day!
The FIRST unexpected event came prior to the game from a certain player (that will remain nameless but hopefully you'll guess) failing to hand-over the kit he took responsibility for at the previous game, leaving captain Tache, as a result, to place desperate phone calls to other team captains before hero Denholm finally retrieving the kit at the (rather drunk) Irishman flat (you have guessed, now, haven't you?)
"I want everybody to turn up in the right frame of mind; I want everybody to be 110% committed to get a victory out of this game" was the message sent to his team by capatain Tache a couple of days prior to the game. And here is the SECOND surprise of the day: yes, he HAD been heard by 13 special players well decided to retrurn from the (not-so-flat ) pitch twith 3 points (a rather rare outcome this season)! It's difficult to describe (you really had to be there), but you could almost flavour this immense urge to win thsi game, just by the number of (excellent Coca-Cola owned) sports drink consumed in the bar whilst awaiting our (already fearful) opposition t o turn up (now, this could also be due to de-hydration occasioned by previous night activities)
DROCHON set the scene with a first goal in the first five minutes. FITZGIBBON imitated the Frenchman with a second goal forcing their central defender to retire from the game at the same occasion. DROCHON set FITZGIBBON again on the goal line for a tap-in excuted clinically by the Englishman. Yes, you've understood properly what was the THIRD unexpected event: the 4th team was 3-0 up at half-time (despite poor mathetatician RUOCCO loudly repeating that it was still 0-0).
In the 2nd half, the defensive TACHE, LAFFINEUR and TACHE remained strong (if a bit bored at times - although not as bored as goalkeeper KERRIGAN). It was not long for the irrestistible FITZGIBBON to get a hattrick thanks to a cross by JOLIFFE and another easy tap-in. MC DERMOTT scored the fifth goal with a powerful and accurate shot in front of the keeper; The impressive JOLIFFE scored the sixth goal, imitated later on by DROCHON for his second goal in the game. Finally, SHEEKEY scored the eigth and last goal leaping like a salmon above the 7' defender to power the ball past the hapless keeper. At some point, the good education we received from our parents forced us to let the opposition to score a goal (goalkeeper KERRIGAN thought it was more polite that way not to abuse of the hospitality of our opposition) And, to summarise, the 8-1 at the final whistle was the FORTH unexpected event of the day.
TACHE reserved us the FIFTH and last unexpected event of the day by losing the keys of the dressing-room, leaving his succesful team to wait for a good 45mns in the corridor.
MOM was awarded to both Captain DENHOLM and top goalscorer FITZGIBBON. Admitably, the opposition did not demonstrate Zidanian skills but a win is a win (not to be confused with DENHOLM most favourite quote "A hole is a hole"*) and maybe, as important, the morale got a lift up for a team deserving to do better than the first half of this season.
- Note of the editor : some would claim that Denholminho's favourite quote is " Never let the truth get in the way of a good story", but that is debatable.
MOM : John Fitzgibbon
