Before the game the captain was heard to say that he would take a draw if it was offered - how wrong he was (again) but at least he won the toss this week as did Michael Vaughan! We played down hill with the breeze and for once we did the right thing and did not give the ball away needlessly. Much of this was due to the sterling work by Talib and Maybrey up front. They held the ball up, creating time for the midfield to get in positions to support them and giving the defence a break that they haven't had for much of the season. The midfield worked well together supporting and battling for each other and more than holding their own against the supposed super stars.

So after 15 minutes it was nil nil - we were involved and battling. Now if you have followed Vets 2 this season then you would know that this has happened in the past but generally what happened next was that we gave away 2 or 3 silly goals before half time. Not this week, this week we scored. First of all Gaukroger almost scored his first goal of this century, which would have matched the goal he scored last century, unfortunately the keeper pulled out a first class stop to thwart him. It was obviously going to take something special to beat this keeper and Talib duly supplied the magic. The ball bounced in front of him on the edge of the area and before you knew it he had volleyed it, back over his shoulder, into the top left hand corner past the despairing hand of the keeper. It was like watching The Matrix!

Even better we managed to build on this lead and really take the game to New Inn. Maybrey and Roosen had shots well saved by the keeper. Brown was providing an outlet for the defence on the right and releasing the forwards to further harrass the opposition. From one of these moves Roosen found himself bearing down on goal from an acute angle, the smart move was to cross, the even smarter move was to score 2-0.

However don't believe that it was all one way traffic - the defence of Mazurkiewicz, Ellison, Varrall were superbly led by McAulay and between them they repelled all the attacks that New Inn could muster.

The half time team talk was of not getting complacent and more of the same. For once we listened and did just that. Unlike the week before we did not drop back and defend too deep, this was due to the efforts of the forwards in holding the ball up. Gallagher in midfield provided the link between defence and attack and seemed to be everywhere. Once again the defence were up to the task and answered all the questions that were asked of them. The midfield began to tire but they did not give up and ran all afternoon. The captain even felt confident enough to change his defence with a couple of substitutions, Hyde and Knott joining the fray. Then to put the icing on the cake we sealed the game with another goal. We forced a corner on the right, the ball arrived in the 5 yard box at the right foot of Ellison who calmly slotted it into the goal. 3-0 The celebration was a bit muted as he wasn't sure whether you'd get a yellow card in ABSSA for taking your shirt off.

There was just time for a couple of potshots from New Inn to remind Reynolds that he was playing in a football game and then it was all over.

Bloody hell we had done it, we played as a team, played decent football and we won.

As Vinnie Jones would say 'It was emotional'!
