After a week of torrid rain and cold temperatures we were delighted that Abssa held their nerve and did not call a Rhianna generale. Much to Brussels LTC disappointment!
A normally resilient LTC had made their game plan very clear from the off. After having won the toss they opted to play with the wind in their backs, 5 defenders and hit us on the break. After a relatively uneventful 20mins LTC won a corner and almost scored had it not been for our goalkeeper’s (Kris) quick reactions to get down and block a shot from 6 yards out. The near miss seemed to invigorate the team slightly and our football started flowing as we took control of the game.
The teams’ recent fortunes have certainly been helped by the return of oh-ah Nils McGrath to full fitness (being generous there as Nils is never really fully fit) and once again he was involved in the opening goal. A good control and a neat pass sent A.Hodgson racing through on the right hand side of the area, an early fizzing shot caught the keeper racing out who could only get finger tips to it. 1-0 to the British.
The second half was all one sided as we had the wind in our backs and LTC were forced to open up as they looked for the equalizer. The second goal came again curtsey of a nice piece of footwork from Nils McGrath. A run (sorry a light jog) down the left hand side after which he cut inside into the box, beat two men, the goalkeeper and then fed Niklaas Lambers for an easy tap in from 3yards out.2-0 to the British!
The 3rd goal would not have looked out of place had it been scored in the premier league. After a nice passage of play in midfield, we had managed to carve out some space down the left flank. The two supersubs then linked up as Michele Vadora delivered a teasing ball into the box and to the feet of Michael Blake. M.Blake then picked out Steve Lamarra’s Gerrardesque maurauding run forward who neatly controlled the ball, sidestepped the defender and slammed the ball into to the bottom right of the goal. 3-0 to the British.
The belief is back, the football is flowing and the best day of the week is Saturday!
